Jari Poulin is an interdisciplinary artist whose work explores the fragile relationship between memory, identity, history, and the photographs we use to remember ourselves. Working across photography, printmaking, installation, writing, and mixed media, she creates images and objects that invite viewers to question what is remembered, what is forgotten, and who ultimately shapes the stories we inherit.

Rather than treating photography as a fixed document, Poulin approaches it as a living material-one capable of holding ambiguity, emotion, and the imperfect nature of human memory. Combining digital and analog processes with polymer photogravure, monotypes, collage, stenciling, and hand-worked surfaces, she constructs layered visual narratives that blur the boundaries between fact and recollection. Her work often challenges conventional ideas of the photographic image, asking not simply what we see, but how we come to believe what we see.

Across bodies of work that range from intimate explorations of grief and family history to investigations of women's overlooked contributions to culture, Poulin returns repeatedly to questions of presence and absence. Her photographs become acts of recovery–seeking traces of lives, relationships, and histories that risk disappearing from both personal and collective memory.

Alongside her studio practice, Poulin is also a writer whose essays, poetry, and songs extend the same inquiries found in her visual work. Whether working with words or images, she is drawn to the ways ordinary objects, family photographs, domestic spaces, and fragments of everyday life carry emotional histories that are often overlooked. Her practice is rooted in the belief that art can preserve not only what happened, but what it felt like to live through it.

Poulin's work has received numerous national and international honors, including recognition from the International Photography Awards, the Julia Margaret Cameron Awards, Prix de la Photographie Paris, the Moscow International Foto Awards, the Pollux Awards, International Color Awards, Black & White Magazine, COLOR Magazine, and Neutral Density Magazine. Her photographs and prints have been exhibited internationally in the United States, Spain, France, Ireland, and Australia.

She holds an MFA in Visual Arts from Lesley University College of Art and Design and has served on the faculty of Maine Media Workshops, Santa Fe Workshops, Nord Photography in Norway, Parsons/New School, and numerous other educational institutions and arts organizations.

Based in Ithaca, New York, Poulin continues to develop long-term projects that weave together photography, printmaking, writing, and research, creating work that invites viewers to reconsider how memory is formed, how histories are constructed, and how overlooked voices can be brought back into the light.
